Rules of Rural Manitoba

A friend and coworker emailed me this little missive earlier today, knowing that rural folk are some of my favorite targets of of derision (not Hutterites though. I love the Hutterites)… I typically mimic banjo music, punctuate sentences with y’all, ga-hyuck, etc, and make inappropriate jokes involving shallow gene pools, innuendo involving sheep and/or cattle, etc, before or after dealing with a rural customer.

Of course, it’s all in fun. I find our rural customers are the most grounded, patient, and well-adjusted customers I have, who know what they need and (most importantly) are willing to wait if something’s not in stock.

So, imagine my amusement when I read the following list of rules:

THE RULES OF RURAL MANITOBA ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Listen up City Slickers!

1. Pull your droopy pants up. You look like an idiot.

2. Turn your cap straight, your head isn’t crooked.

3. Let’s get this straight; it’s called a ‘dirt road.’ I drive a pickup truck because I want to. No matter how slow you drive, you’re going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way.

4. They are cattle. They’re live steaks. That’s why they smell funny to you. But they smell like money to us. Get over it. Don’t like it? Hwy 1 & 2 goes east and west, Hwy 16 & 75 goes north and south. Pick one.

5. So you have a $60,000 car. We’re impressed. We have $200,000 combines and hay balers that are driven only 3 weeks a year.

6. So every person in rural Manitoba waves. It’s called ‘being friendly. Try to understand the concept.

7. If that cell phone rings while an 8-point buck and 3 does are coming in, we WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don’t have it up to your ear at the time.

8. Yeah, we eat meat and potatoes. You really want sushi & caviar? It’s available at the corner bait shop.

9. The ‘Opener’ refers to the first day of deer hunting season. It’s a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November.

10. We open doors for women. That is applied to all women, regardless of age.

11. There’s little for ‘vegetarians’ on the menu. Order steak. Or you can order the Chef’s Salad and pick off the 2 pounds of ham & turkey.

12. When we set a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup.

13. You bring ‘coke’ into my house, it better be brown, wet and served over ice.

14. You bring ‘Mary Jane’ into my house, she better be cute, know how to shoot, drive a truck, and have long hair.

15. Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Minor Hockey is as important here as the Maple Leafs and Montreal Habs, and more fun to watch.

16. Yeah, we have golf courses. But don’t hit the water hazards — it spooks the fish.

17. Colleges? We have them all over. We have Universities and Community Colleges. They come outta there with an education plus a love for God and country, and they still wave at everybody when they come for the holidays.

18. We have a whole ton of folks in the Armed Forces. So don’t mess with us. If you do, you will get whipped by the best.

19. Turn down that blasted car stereo! That thumpity-thump crap ain’t music, anyway. We don’t want to hear it anymore than we want to see your boxers. (Refer back to #1).

20. 2 inches of snow & ice isn’t a blizzard – it’s a vacation. Drive like you got some sense in it, and DON’T take all our bread, milk, and bleach from the grocery stores. This ain’t Alaska , worst case you may have to live a whole day without croissants. The pickups with snow blades and tractors with snow blowers will have you out the next day.

Now, I’m sure this list has been making the rounds for decades now, and probably started life as Rules of Rural Idaho, Rules of Rural Texas, Rules of Rural Sweden, etc, but I’m reasonably sure the “differences” between rural and city people are universal.

It’s nice to know the rural folks have just as much fun at our expense as we do at theirs.

All in good fun, of course!

History of the Sport of Golf Golfing

It all started long ago in 1743 which was one year before the formation of the Company of Gentleman Golfers; there is an actual shipping record of 96 golf clubs and 432 golf balls delivered from Leith Scotland to a Mr. D. Deas in Charleston, South Carolina. This shipping order size obviously suggests that the shipment was destined for a group of golfers. Then again Mr. David Deas may have been an eccentric. It is also believed that another golf club or society was organized in Savanna Georgia around the same time period.

It took until 1888 for the first permanent golf club to form. The location was in Yonkers New York. The St. Andrew’s Golf Club was formed by a Mr. Johnny Reid and a crew of golfers who came to have the nickname of the “”Apple Tree Gang”". Reid and his friends were exceptional devotees of the game of golf. Initially all that was available was 3 hole golf course that began and ended near the landmark of a large apple tree.

Many consider that Reid is the father of American golf while others would insist that Charles Blair Macdonald – a gold enthusiast, writer and golf course architect deserves the honors.

Macdonald, whom The “”Golf Journal”" termed the “”True Pioneer of American Golf”", was the driving force behind the creation of the pivotal Chicago Golf Club, the first 18 hole golf course in the United States of America. This was in 1892 that Macdonald, the golf pioneer, was able to lay the groundwork by convincing and persuading 30 Chicago business associates to pitch in the princely sum at the time of $ 10 apiece so that a nine hole golf could be constructed and developed. This golf site was to destined to become the prestigious and historic Downers Grove Golf Course. Later the next year an additional 9 holes were added to complete the first 18 hole golf course in America.

Macdonald, who had studied in Scotland at the St. Andrews University, is also credited with development of golf course architecture in the United States. Best known of his works is the National Golf Links course on Long Island, Along with that Macdonald left his mark by both assisting in and in creation of the USGA – the United States Golf Association.

The USGA emerged in the wake of a dispute between the St. Andrew’s Golf Club and the Newport Rhode Island Golfing Clubs. In the summertime of 1894 each hosted an invitational golfing tournament, amazingly enough without the apparent knowledge of the other club . Each golf club declared the winner of their tournament to be the “”National Amateur American Golf Champion”". Humorously enough a sore loser , in the person of McDonald himself , ignited the debacle and then suggested to clear the air that an official golf tournament be organized and arranged by an official golf organization . Of course this golf tournament administrative group would be be in charge of the the event.

What followed was a meeting of the delegates from Newport Golf Club, St. Andrews, the Chicago Golf Club, Shinnecock Hills Country Club and the Country Club in Brookline Massachusetts. These delegations founded the Amateur Golf Association of the United States which later to become known as the USGA . The foundation of the USGA were laid on December 22, 1894.

Thus golf was on its way to become the mainstream prestigious recreational sport of America.

Manitoba Calling

Gift Gate

When Manitoba hosted the Western Premiers Conference in 2006, visiting politicians were given so many gifts, they had to be given bags to carry them all home. Although details are still coming forward, the event is shaping up to be yet another example of government extravagance and waste.

Golf shirts, denim shirts, fishing reels, chocolates, jackets, scarves and scales for weighing fish were some of the “mementos” handed out using public dollars. Some attendees received $185 “ Hyde Port garment bags” while others had to “get by” with $15 bags.

As it stands right now, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has obtained government documents that showed at least $25,907 was spent on gifts for the conference’s 105 “dignitaries”. If you do the math, that’s an average of $246 per attendee — and counting.

Unfortunately, we still don’t have all the details. The government informed the CTF that it would have to pay $600 in order to get all the expense information. As a non-profit organization, that’s a tough pill to swallow, but we’ll continue to do what we can to get to the bottom of this.

However, what we do know is that MPI, Manitoba Hydro and the MLCC picked up the $25,907 gift tab. That’s right, when you paid your Autopac and hydro bills in 2006, you actually helped buy bags full of “mementos” for Alberta Premier Ralph Klein and the bureaucrat posse he brought with him to the conference.

Surprisingly, documents revealed that although MPI’s board was only asked to donate $8,000 towards buying gifts, they decided to top it up to $10,000. How nice of them to throw our Autopac premiums around with such a care free attitude. Little wonder why they recently fought to hide their expenses from the public utilities board.

Not to be outdone, Manitoba Lotteries kicked in $10,000 for a private concert for the guests which featured Doc Walker, an award winning band. Nothing against Doc Walker, but do these guests really need a private concert? Couldn’t someone have put on a DVD for them or encouraged them to go and spend some money in the local community?

If you can’t think of the connection between crown corporations and sponsoring conferences like this one, don’t worry, there isn’t one. Crown corporations should not have contributed a cent towards the conference as it has nothing to do with their respective mandates.

Most disappointing about the whole issue was Premier Doer’s response in the legislature. When questioned about the expenses, the Premier responded:

“I know that other premiers have had similar criticism. I know that when we went to the Canadian premiers’ meeting in Alberta a couple of years ago, there was criticism about some of the investments made in that meeting that Premier Klein hosted and the costs of the meeting.”

If Premier Doer knew Alberta taxpayers were upset over expenses from when the conference that was held there, why wasn’t anything done to protect Manitoba taxpayers when it was our turn?

Besides, when he saw everyone walking around with matching jackets, denim shirts and bags, didn’t he wonder who was paying for it all?

Taxpayers deserve all the details from the conference. However, more importantly, we need some policy changes on Broadway to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Manitoba Non Golfing Weather for Duffers – Golf this Summer

Overall, the month finished over a degree above normal with a mean temperature of -4.2C at the airport (-3.2C at my site) vs a long term November average of -5.3C. The month began on a very mild note, with a record high of 18.8C on the 3rd.. the warmest November day in Winnipeg since Nov 5th 1975 when we hit 23.9C (all time November high). The mild start and snowfree ground had golfers enjoying some late season golf through Nov 4th, with no hint of winter like weather. That would change soon enough however as a storm system tracking through from the Dakotas on Nov 6th-7th brought a messy mix of rain, freezing rain, ice pellets and snow to the Red River valley. The storm brought some 40-70 mm of rain and ice pellets to the southern Red River valley bringing high water levels to the Red River on the heels of a wetter than normal fall. By the morning of the 7th, Winnipeg and much of the western Red River valley had been transformed into a winter wonderland, with about 5-8 cm of snow falling in Winnipeg and heavier amounts of 15-25 cm west of the city from Pilot Mound through Portage. Snow has remained on the ground since with a month end snowcover of 5 cm in Winnipeg. Areas further south and east of Winnipeg however saw much less snow with this storm system, and enjoyed snowfree grounds through the end of the month.

After the 7th, the weather turned quiet and uneventful with some minor snowfalls now and then but little in the way of high impact weather. A mid month cold snap brought the month’s coldest temperature of -19C on the 21st but that was followed by mild and dry conditions to end the month. The month finished with about 15 cm of snow at my site, slightly less than an average November monthly snowfall of 21 cm.

Oliver’s Twist: Cano finally back in LPGA swing

To get back to the top women’s tour in the world after more than a year’s absence would take something all too familiar Sunday.

A fight.

Cano, teeing off early into the teeth of 30 mph gusts, was playing the 11th round of an arduous qualifying journey that began with sectional events in September. Even before that, however, injuries, inconsistency and economics had combined to knock her professional career on the ropes.

But over four hours Sunday, dealing with swirling winds and emotions, the San Antonio player took care of business in posting a 2-over 74 to tie for 29th out of 139 players. The top-30 finish, while not good enough for a full-time exemption, earned Cano status for at least 10 LPGA events next season.

“I can breathe now,” she said by phone shortly after completing the fifth round at LPGA International. “I was really happy out there today.”

The reasons for it outnumber the clubs in Cano’s bag. She has competed in recent years with limited resources, working at Pecan Valley and other sites to mold more than just her game. She needed the paychecks.

The former Edison High School standout was one of the LPGA Tour’s remarkable stories in 2006 when she emerged out of a Q-School playoff to secure a full-time exemption. However, a hand injury undercut her rookie season, forcing her to apply for a medical exemption to play the following year.

Erratic play, spurred in part by traveling each week on the cheap, hiring local caddies along the way, teamed to strip her of her card at the end of 2007.

She played a scattering of Duramed Futures Tour events this year before stepping away last summer to rehab her game, earn some money and focus on qualifying school. After Cano missed the cut at the first stage in California in September, she immediately headed cross-country to Venice, Fla., to move on from the inaugural stage there less than a week later.

Golfer & Golfing Stance, Allignment and Golf Ball Position

Golf can be said to be one of the most frustrating games. Whether it can be said that golf is a game of skill or a game of chance all depends. It depends on your skill, talents and persistence. Golf can be said to be a game that to be played well takes a great amount of concerted effort to master. On the other hand just to be a social outing or a social sport one need not devote their whole life to the sport and passion of golf and golfing.

One of the most important parts of the game of golf and the sport of golfing is alignment – that of making sure that you as a golfer, are properly aligned with your target line during your shot, Before you tee off, it is of vital importance that you have a more than exact idea of your landing area of your golf ball. Consider this important because you will find it helpful to picture your shot, in your mind’s eye before you actually hit the ball with the golf club of your choice.

Once you are at the point where you have determined your target, then position yourself to stand directly behind your golf ball and your target. Pick what might be called a “secondary” target – for example a given tree on the fairway, a divot or even some item as small as a brown colored leaf. The arbitrarily chosen “second target” should be placed a few feet in front of your golf ball and can also be in line with your aimed target. The reason for this procedure all in all is that you will find that it is much easier to line up with an object close by rather than something or some location far away – say 200 yards or more.

The next step will be a position where you will be ready to “address the golf ball”. When you are at the stage of “addressing” your ball it will be as if you will be trying to create a railroad track structure with your golf ball on the target track and your feet , knees, hips, shoulders and even your eyes- parallel left of the target track ( in the case of right handed golfers.) If you need to visualize this whole setup better, you can lay clubs on the grass to create your railroad track structure. Place one club on the grass behind the ball aiming directly at your target, and place the other golf club down on the grass in form of your feet even touching your toes. When your two clubs work to create a perfectly balanced railroad track structure that can be said to be laid out in a perfectly parallel railroad track arrangement then you are “properly aligned”.

Now that you are in a state of perfect “golfing alignment” you will next need to make sure that your ball is placed correctly in your golfing stance. The ball position for normal shots on flat ground areas should be played slightly toward the center points. It can be said that the center refers to the middle point squarely between your two feet. This center point is the position that is usually going to get your clubs to be solidly square at impact and thus guide your golf ball along in the direction of your chosen target. It can be said that it is vitally important, to your golf game, your golf game and your consistent skill as a golfer to understand that this ball position applies to standard level terrain. The ball position in these terms does not apply to trouble shots or downhill lies.

Lastly in your correct alignment and golfing stance your golf ball will be in the perfect and correct position, your choice of golf club will affect the width of your stance – that is how far your feet are placed apart. The general rule is to say that the longer the golf club, the wider your stance will be while always remembering that no matter how wide or narrow your stance is the golf ball position always stays the same in relation to your front foot.

Remember that the worst and most frustrating day at the golf course is always better than the best day at work.
